This is Your Teen on Weed: The Data About Cannabis and How to Help Your Teen Resist
Speaker: Elizabeth Jorgensen, CADC

The rate of adolescents who use weed and high potency THC products like 'edibles,' 'wax,' 'Dabs' and 'carts' has risen dramatically in the past 10 years. There is a strong cultural acceptance of weed among all teens (even those who do not use) and young adults that contributes to higher rates of use, abuse and dependence. Cases of cannabis-induced psychosis are also drastically increasing as the high potency THC products become easily available to teens and college students. The data connecting pre-existing depression and trauma to later adolescent THC abuse and dependence will be discussed. This workshop teaches adults about the weed culture, facts about all high potency THC products, the clinical risks for cannabis dependence, and how to engage teens in effective treatment.

Learning Objectives
-Interpret the data on rates of cannabis use among teens and young adults
-Know the risks specific to high potency THC products and the products themselves
-Understand the pre-existing risks of depression, mood disorders and trauma that place teens at risk for developing cannabis dependence
-Explain effective techniques and methods of engaging teens into the process of assessment and treatment for cannabis abuse / dependency
